Paul Loudenslager, lives in Tifton, Georgia wrote to me.
"I don't know how far your house is from your mailbox, but my mailbox is approximately 350 feet from the house. It's tiring at my age to travel back and forth several times a day to see if the mail has arrived. My mail is delivered at various times.
Can you recommend a reliable wireless mailbox alert that will transmit at least 500 feet?
There are pine tree branches hanging down possibly in the line of transmission, but they can be cut.
I just received a STI-34200 Wireless Mailbox Alert with a faulty receiver, so I'm a bit gunshy with this brand. Any other type you could recommend?"
My answer to Paul was pretty simple:
"Paul,
There are quite a few pretty good wireless mailbox alert systems online. I've not tested all of them, but I'm a ham radio operator and can attest to the power of radio.
You can also consider using something like a Ring floodlight camera, Arlo, or other security cameras. I have an Arlo camera that sends me an email the moment something moves in its sight.
My Ring floodlight allows me to adjust the sensitivity so you don't get false positive messages. You'll have to play with it to make sure it works. This will really only work on low-traffic roads or otherwise, every passing car will send you an alert!"
