Hi, I'm Tim Carter, AskTheBuilder.com, and I'm here at the job site. They're still working
0:18
Kind of late in the day, they're starting to put the roof on. And remember, this is not my job
0:23
If you discover something new, consider clicking that thanks button underneath the video
0:30
That allows me to make more videos faster for you when I'm in town
0:34
And guess what? You can tell the weather's changed, right? Yeah, I told you this was going to happen
0:41
I told you it was going to get cold. And we had snow just 36 hours ago
0:46
Let's take a look at what's going on. What you can see is the house has got the orangish zip sheathing on it
0:56
That seems to be the industry standard now. And I know it might be hard to see in the video, but they have taped all the seams
1:03
That's what they're supposed to do. The contractors have put on, and this is a good thing
1:13
they've put on two rows of the black, gray, size, and water shield
1:18
You can see that they're putting on the shingles now. They're black. They're using an air nailer
1:25
You can hear it go on. It's like a machine gun. Here it goes. Listen. You can go pretty quickly using a nail gun No doubt about that But if you don have the pressure set right you could have all kinds of problems You could blow the nail through the shingle and it especially problematic now with as cool and as cold as it is
1:45
Temperature right now, it's about 35 degrees, maybe 34 degrees here in New Hampshire right now
1:51
And the date, November 17th. All I wanted to really talk about was, so this is the industry standard
2:01
This zip sheathing, it's OSB board that has got a plastic coating on it
2:07
So for the most part, it's water, I'm going to say water resistant
2:12
They may like to say that it's waterproof. But the point is, is that it isn't the perfect solution
2:22
If you want the perfect solution and you don't want leaks in places where you have a lot of wood-driven rain
2:29
or like here in New Hampshire where we would get ice dams, you want to put grace ice and water shield down
2:35
And you really want to put it over the entire roof. I doubt they're going to put it over the entire roof here
2:40
they will most likely continue it up the side here where the dormer touches the roof or where
2:51
the roof touches the dormer uh it's a little too far down the roof they're they're not up high
2:55
enough yet where we could see them do that we'll try to catch that tomorrow but anyway i just wanted
3:01
to let you know that the roof going on uh these are go man the sun going to set here in a few minutes It be dark here in about 35 minutes but these guys are really doing their best to try to get the job done I do want to show you something that not OSHA approved if you haven already picked up on this in the video
3:23
All right, so this is a machine. It's called a Lull, and bricklayers typically use it
3:28
but I don't know if you can see this. They put a pallet on the forks
3:33
and then they extended a pick over to the pallet to be able to walk on
3:40
Absolutely not the safest thing to do, all right, you know. And the reason why they did that is because there was no way to keep the ladder off of
3:51
there was nothing to put the ladder against here except that post. so but it's still not I'm sure if OSHA came along they would not be happy and I mean
4:04
you know those guys got to be careful working on it I hope they've got a good I hope their
4:09
workman's comp is paid up to date all right that's about all I can show you in this video today
4:14
I'm not able to do videos so much during the day because they're still working here until
4:19
just about dark. So I'm just going to be able to do them on the weekends. Well, that's the roof
4:25
going on. At this rate, they've got really good weather forecast for the next four or five days
4:31
Tomorrow's Friday. They may get this side done today. I'm sorry, tomorrow. And then I don't know
4:41
how far I don know if they going to work on the weekend They haven been working on the weekends But by Thanksgiving this house should be under roof So next up would be the windows and doors to make it weather tight
4:54
So, all right. Hope you discovered something new. What you should have discovered
5:00
Grace Ice and Water Shield is really a product you need to have underneath your shingles
5:05
if you live in a place that gets lots of snow and ice like New Hampshire
5:10
And it should go over the entire roof. So, all right, I'm Tim Carter
5:14
