the best razor knives and I've uh I've
0:03
used razor knives for over 50 years and
0:06
they've changed a lot and it's a really
0:09
kind of a personal
0:11
thing
0:13
um in other words what what one person
0:17
may like about a particular razor knife
0:19
um somebody else may hate um it's all a
0:23
matter of how it fits in your hand and
0:26
if you don't have one that fits in your
0:27
hand really well um you're just not
0:30
going to like it i'm going to show you a
0:32
few i'm going to show you this one and
0:34
this one and this
0:37
one and this is my all-time favorite
0:40
this is a This is absolutely my all-time
0:43
favorite it's still in the package
0:45
because my son gave it to me as a
0:46
replacement for the one that's in my
0:48
tool belt and I don't want to take it
0:51
out of the package so you'll just have
0:53
to trust me on this one but I'll
0:54
describe why it's really really really
0:56
well i mean it's a really good razor
0:58
knife they're getting harder to find so
1:00
if you can find one of these you want to
1:02
buy a couple of them okay so here's a
1:06
really um this one is is by Stanley all
1:09
right this is
1:11
um it's just a very utilitarian razor
1:15
knife uh it only holds one blade uh you
1:18
have to press of course this button here
1:21
down to push it out to extend the razor
1:24
so it's like that it's um very
1:28
lightweight uh I think it's probably
1:30
made out of aluminum um and then if you
1:33
need to change the blade you use this
1:35
little tab here all right so you know I
1:39
don't like this one very much it's it's
1:40
a little too fat for me
1:43
um it's got a really nice rubber grip
1:45
you know so if if you're working in wet
1:47
conditions that'll help hold things but
1:49
it's a really really basic uh razor
1:52
knife um here's another Stanley one this
1:55
is a little fancier all right what's
1:57
interesting about this particular razor
1:59
knife uh I know it's kind of hard for
2:01
you to see in this light um I'm out on
2:04
my deck and I'm trying to keep out of
2:05
the bright sunlight i've got a umbrella
2:08
up
2:09
anyway um this one has got the exact
2:12
same slide mechanism as my favorite one
2:16
as the quick slide all right it's got
2:18
the exact same but it's a really thicker
2:21
razor knife and the reason why is is uh
2:24
this is also um it's also a a pocket
2:28
knife all right it's got it's it's like
2:30
two in one so not only is it a razor
2:32
knife it's like a pocket knife with a
2:35
serrated blade here are very sharp so um
2:38
it's it's really
2:40
um it's a very interesting razor knife
2:43
and of course to make the razor knife
2:44
work same old thing you just push down
2:46
on this and extend it and there's your
2:48
your blade all right and it's really
2:51
easy to change it it's got a
2:52
spring-loaded mechanism here that you
2:54
lift up and by lifting this up you know
2:58
just a little bit it lets you slide the
3:00
razor out right once again um it's it's
3:04
a it's called the Quick Slide Sport is
3:06
what this one's called but once again
3:09
it's fatter because it has to have the
3:12
regular knife blade in it so it if
3:14
you're looking for something slim and
3:16
just a razor knife I think you're going
3:19
to really like the Quickslide all right
3:20
that's this one here look how thin it is
3:22
i mean it's in the package but it's very
3:25
thin all right it's this is an
3:27
incredible razor knife is all I can tell
3:29
you the Stanley Quick Slide Here's one
3:32
that's kind of interesting I got not too
3:33
long ago uh from DeWalt all right so
3:36
this one is uh I'll uh Dustin I'll
3:39
answer your question just a second hold
3:41
on there buddy so this is a really
3:42
interesting one um you you push this
3:45
button here so it's it's it's safe it's
3:47
got a safety in it so it won't bring the
3:49
blade out on its own you got to push
3:52
this little button so when you push this
3:54
button I'll do it i know it's hard for
3:56
you to see so I push this button in and
3:59
then I pull it out the razor knife right
4:01
there and this is kind of an interesting
4:04
knife it's got it's got a really great
4:06
spot here this indent for your index
4:09
finger so that's very comfortable uh
4:12
it's a little fatter than normal
4:15
um but I've used this knife and I kind
4:18
of like it i really do i kind of like
4:19
this knife um and it's really easy to
4:23
change the blade same old thing you know
4:25
right here is where you pull that up and
4:27
that that allows you to get access to
4:29
the blade and change it you know you
4:31
just lift this up you know i just I'm
4:33
just you can see that I can pull that
4:35
out that allows me to access the blade
4:38
all right so really really interesting
4:40
razor knives um there are many more all
4:43
right there's all kinds of different
4:44
ones out there um and
4:47
um hey hi from Pakistan it's great that
4:51
isn't this YouTube live amazing i mean
4:53
people from all over the world can watch
4:55
it at the same time i know it's all
4:57
blown out in the background uh that's
4:58
Lake Winnwam behind me i know you can't
5:01
see it uh because it's so it's because
5:03
the I'm underneath this uh umbrella uh
5:06
Dustin let's see for all who have seen
5:09
uh Okay so Dustin's got um uh trying to
5:15
pull in some religion
5:16
here all right all right uh hi from
5:20
Norway it's great yeah it's great that
5:21
you're here um I'm always interested too
5:24
just so you know in the different tools
5:26
that are available to you in your
5:29
country uh it's it's um you know we
5:32
don't have access to that i have no idea
5:34
what you use i would love to see u
5:36
videos of that so if you have your own
5:38
YouTube channel which I suspect you do
5:41
and you can make your own little video
5:43
about razor knives you know just upload
5:44
a simple video and just uh if you put in
5:47
razor knife uh then when the rest of us
5:50
in the world search for it we're going
5:51
to find it all right um realize that I
5:54
also do a uh weekly newsletter if you're
5:57
looking to get home improvement
5:58
information uh I'm the original home
6:01
improvement channel here on YouTube i
6:02
know that sounds crazy but it's
6:05
true oh my dog my dog got her on the
6:08
deck that's one of the rare times she
6:09
barks but there's some squirrel or
6:11
something down there she's not happy
6:12
with come
6:14
on that's very unusual for her to bark i
6:17
can tell you that right now
6:21
oh that's pretty hilarious uh I think uh
6:23
we buy a lot of American Tools but Bosch
6:25
uh B Bosch I love Bosch uh I like Bosch
6:28
a lot i like their power tools i've had
6:31
nothing but great success over the years
6:33
i have a Bosch uh belt sander a corded
6:37
one that's probably 40 years old uh it
6:41
works like uh now like like I took it
6:43
out of the box yesterday so I'm I love
6:47
the quality that Bosch does and uh I've
6:49
been to a couple of their uh editor
6:51
events very very uh good company uh they
6:55
still seem to be focused on quality
6:57
which is wonderful to see and remember
6:59
that the difference between these power
7:00
tools I'll just kind of switch gears a
7:02
little
7:03
bit when you see a really inexpensive
7:06
power tool let's just talk about a like
7:08
a cordless drill uh and and you see one
7:11
that say I'm just making this number up
7:13
$39 right some brand that's 39 bucks
7:16
that you might buy at Home Depot or
7:17
Lowe's and then you see the identical
7:20
drill but it's
7:23
$159 you would go "How can that be?"
7:26
Well the difference is the cheap drill
7:29
is probably got plastic gears a really
7:32
really uh low quality electric motor um
7:36
they're just not built to uh to do
7:38
intense work and I have personal
7:40
experience with this probably 30 years
7:42
ago I was helping a friend of mine work
7:44
on his deck and we both had to be
7:47
drilling things at the same time he had
7:49
a cheap drill i had of course a really
7:51
good one that I used all the time and he
7:54
started drilling and in 40 minutes he
7:56
completely burned up his drill it was he
7:58
had to throw it away it was useless so
8:01
you know cheap cheap uh cheap uh tools
8:04
just don't don't last dewalt yeah I know
8:07
dewalt's uh DeWalt has made a big name
8:09
for themselves uh in the past 10-15
8:12
years they've really come on strong you
8:14
know there's a big battle I think here
8:15
in the United States between DeWalt uh
8:18
Milwaukee uh you know they're trying to
8:21
each um uh get you know the lion share
8:25
of the market and the the the the big
8:28
problem is that I I saw this coming 15
8:30
years ago with these cordless tools is
8:33
really to me I thought what happened
8:35
what was happening was the tool
8:37
manufacturers were they were becoming
8:40
like the razor blade companies in other
8:42
words the razor blade companies they'll
8:43
give you the razor for I mean the tool
8:46
the shaver for free they just want you
8:48
to buy the blades and then you're locked
8:50
into those blades and that's the trouble
8:52
with these cordless tools is that you
8:53
get locked into their system because the
8:56
batteries are not interchangeable but I
8:58
think there might be uh legislation
9:00
happening that is going to uh help and
9:03
make batteries interchangeable all right
9:05
which is what they should be in other
9:07
words I should be able just to buy one
9:09
think about it you go to the grocery
9:11
store now or or any other place and you
9:13
buy a double A battery you can put that
9:15
AA battery in a thousand different
9:18
things all right that's the way it
9:19
should be for power tools like I may
9:21
want to buy just uh Bosch power tools i
9:24
should be able to go anywhere and buy a
9:25
replacement battery for it it shouldn't
9:27
have to be a Bosch battery all right
9:30
okay uh let's see what Posh says fun
9:32
fact NASA was part of making a cordless
9:34
drill when they were creating tools i
9:36
don't doubt it don't doubt it um the
9:38
first cordless tool I saw was probably
9:41
40 years ago it was a tiny little my
9:44
heating and air conditioning contractor
9:46
9.6vt sixbolt little nut driver by
9:49
Makita it was his favorite tool it was a
9:52
t It was literally the first cordless
9:53
tool I'd ever seen so uh all right well
9:56
I'm going to sign off now i uh
9:58
appreciate you watching uh remember
10:00
razor knives if you want my opinion this
10:04
is the best one you can get the uh quick
10:07
slide by Stanley really really I love I
10:10
love mine in fact I wish I would have
10:12
had it here to show you how worn it is
10:14
i've used it so much that uh I' I don't
10:17
want to say I've worn it out but you
10:19
know the paints all it doesn't look new
10:20
at all but uh my son just makes fun of
10:23
me all the time with it so uh I'm not
10:25
going to um I'm not going to take this
10:27
out of the package ever so that when I
10:29
die and he cleans out the garage um
10:32
he'll uh find it and then maybe he'll
10:34
keep it and give it to his son who knows
10:36
all right i'm Tim Carter ask the Builder
10:39
uh hi there oh what before I sign off I
10:41
see you've got a question what's your uh
10:43
question there s uh shady I guess send
10:47
me what let me know what your question
10:49
is milwaukee is made for in Germany uh
10:51
China some yeah absolutely i need to
10:54
create a rafter for a 24 garage door
10:56
what beam should I use that's a really
10:58
uh boy that's a long span so here's the
11:01
trouble with that um I can't tell you
11:04
the size because I don't know what the
11:05
load is on top of that beam uh you might
11:08
not have any load you might have all
11:10
kinds of concentrated loads uh it's
11:12
really not uh a simple thing but I can
11:14
tell you for a 20ft beam um you're
11:18
probably going to end up going with uh
11:21
uh you're going to go with 2x12s and
11:24
you're probably going to have to
11:25
sandwich into it what we used to call a
11:27
what we call a flitch plate so that's a
11:30
piece of quarter inch or 38 inch thick
11:32
steel that that's probably you know 11
11:35
in high a 2x12 is you know 11 and a
11:39
quarter and then you have to get the
11:43
uh the steel company to punch 9/116
11:46
holes in it all right 9/16 holes and
11:49
they need to be probably 2 feet on
11:51
center staggered two rows of those so
11:53
that you can throughbolt the the the
11:57
steel the piece of steel in between two
12:00
uh of those 2 by12s think of like an
12:02
Oreo cookie all right and the white part
12:05
of the cookie is the steel flate uh that
12:08
will be extremely strong i'm also going
12:10
to tell you right now it's going to be
12:11
extremely heavy probably going to need
12:12
six people to lift that up that's a
12:14
really big piece of steel uh and then
12:16
with the 2 by12s uh it's going to be a
12:19
lot of weight um so uh all right oh flat
12:23
yeah flat roof that's that's a lot of
12:25
weight depends on which way you're your
12:27
choice of one but anyway flitch plates
12:29
probably the best way to go because
12:30
you're not going to find you can also
12:32
maybe find a micro lamb beams you can
12:34
get micro lamb beams i think we can get
12:36
them here in the United States uh
12:38
that'll span that distance easily uh
12:40
you'll have to look at one of their span
12:42
tables to see how high to go how high
12:44
that has to be but uh you can get
12:46
microlam wood engineered wood beams
12:49
that'll work as well too so uh just just
12:53
go ahead and um look at go to go to an
12:56
old fashioned lumber company and ask
12:57
about micro lambs uh ask about
13:00
engineered joist you know micro beams uh
13:04
there's there's all kinds of really
13:05
great engineered wood products that'll
13:08
work in that
13:09
application all right you're very
13:11
welcome uh thanks very much for watching
13:13
and um I will uh be doing more of these
13:16
it's really spontaneous i just pick a
13:18
time to do one and uh come on live and
13:21
uh do what it is so sign up for my
